Organisation
Blue
Circle Cement, Hope Works Business Unit
Background
Blue Circle made
the decision to develop a "Self-Directing Teams" culture
and Hope Works were the first Business to undertake the training
and planning to bring this about. The culture was historically one
of Command and Control that needed to change to a more Participative
Management in order to facilitate the transition to the Self-Directing
Teams Culture. The Supervisors were technically excellent but
were blocking progress with their traditional styles. The need to
utilise their strengths while removing the blockage from the way
forward became one of the keys to a successful assignment.
Project Objectives
To prepare all the teams at the Business Unit for Self Direction
and provide Implementation Support for selected teams in support
of the Personnel Department.
To increase the effectiveness of the teams with regard to
their ability to plan tasks, allocate their resources on a daily
basis, run team meetings and absorb the duties of their former
Supervisors.
Prepare the Supervisors for their new role as Technical
Facilitators.
Project
Outcomes
All teams are operating on a Self-Directing basis for all
their day to day operations.
Significant cost savings achieved due to the removal of Supervisory
level.
Technical Facilitators are now focused on strategic
issues of maintenance and plant reliability.
Senior Managers are working at a higher level of thinking with
regard to the wider Business Issues for the Works.
